Early Life
Moss Hart was born in New York City on December 24, 1904. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Poland. Hart's father was a tailor, and his mother was a homemaker. Hart had two older sisters.
Hart's family was poor, and he grew up in a crowded tenement on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Hart was a sickly child, and he spent much of his time reading. He developed a love of theater at an early age, and he often attended vaudeville shows and movies.
Early Career
After graduating from high school, Hart worked as a clerk in a clothing store. He also wrote short stories and plays. In 1925, Hart met George S. Kaufman, a successful playwright and director. Kaufman encouraged Hart to pursue a career in theater.
Hart's first play, Once in a Lifetime, was produced on Broadway in 1930. The play was a critical and commercial success, and it established Hart as a major playwright. Hart went on to write a number of successful plays, including The Man Who Came to Dinner (1939),Lady in the Dark (1941),and Winged Victory (1943).
Hollywood
In the 1940s, Hart moved to Hollywood to work as a screenwriter. He wrote a number of successful films, including Gentleman's Agreement (1947),A Star Is Born (1954),and Auntie Mame (1958).
Hart returned to Broadway in the 1960s. He wrote a number of successful plays, including My Fair Lady (1964),Camelot (1960),and The Great White Hope (1968).
Later Life
Hart died of a heart attack in 1961. He was 56 years old.
