Black history is an important part of American history, and it's essential for kids to learn about the contributions of Black people to our country. This lesson plan provides a variety of engaging activities that will help kids learn about Black history in a fun and interactive way.

1. Read aloud from a Pulitzer Prize-winning book about Black history.

There are many great Pulitzer Prize-winning books about Black history that are appropriate for kids. Some of our favorites include:

  • The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles
  • March by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell
  • New Kid by Jerry Craft
  • The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander and Kadir Nelson
  • Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson

2. Discuss the book with your kids.

After you read aloud from the book, take some time to discuss it with your kids. Ask them what they learned, what they found interesting, and what they think about the book's message.

3. Have your kids create a project based on the book.

Your kids can create a variety of projects based on the book, such as:

  • A timeline of events from the book
  • A character map
  • A diorama
  • A song or poem
  • A piece of art

4. Visit a local museum or historical site.

Many museums and historical sites have exhibits on Black history. Take your kids to visit one of these places and learn more about the history of Black people in America.

5. Invite a guest speaker to talk to your kids about Black history.

Invite a guest speaker, such as a local historian or author, to talk to your kids about Black history. This is a great way for kids to learn more about the subject from an expert.

To assess your kids' learning, you can:

  • Ask them to write a short essay about what they learned from the lesson.
  • Have them create a project based on the book.
  • Give them a quiz on the material covered in the lesson.

This lesson plan is just a starting point. There are many other ways to teach kids about Black history. The most important thing is to make learning about Black history fun and engaging for kids.
