On December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. The attack resulted in the deaths of over 2,400 Americans and the sinking or damage of 19 ships, including the battleships USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a turning point in World War II. It brought the United States into the war and led to the eventual defeat of Japan.

Events leading up to the attack

The origins of the attack on Pearl Harbor can be traced back to the early 1900s, when Japan began to expand its empire in the Pacific. Japan's goal was to create a "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere," which would include all of East Asia and Southeast Asia.

In the 1930s, Japan began to aggressively pursue its expansionist goals. In 1931, Japan invaded Manchuria, a Chinese province. In 1937, Japan launched a full-scale invasion of China. The United States and other Western powers condemned Japan's actions, but they did not take any concrete steps to stop Japan.

In 1940, Japan signed the Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy. This pact created a military alliance between the three countries. The United States viewed the Tripartite Pact as a threat to its own security interests in the Pacific.

In 1941, Japan began to plan an attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese hoped that by destroying the U.S. Pacific Fleet, they could cripple the United States and force it to negotiate a peace treaty on Japan's terms.

The attack

On December 7, 1941, at 7:55 AM, a Japanese fleet of six aircraft carriers, two battleships, two cruisers, and nine destroyers launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese attacked in two waves. The first wave consisted of 183 planes that targeted the battleships and other ships in the harbor. The second wave consisted of 171 planes that targeted the airfields and other military installations on Oahu.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a complete surprise. The U.S. military was not expecting an attack, and it was not prepared to defend itself. The Japanese planes quickly overwhelmed the American defenses and caused massive damage to the U.S. fleet.

The attack on Pearl Harbor lasted for about two hours. When the Japanese planes finally withdrew, they had sunk or damaged 19 ships, including the battleships USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma. Over 2,400 Americans were killed in the attack, and over 1,000 were wounded.

Aftermath of the attack

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a turning point in World War II. It brought the United States into the war and led to the eventual defeat of Japan.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, the United States declared war on Japan. The United States also began to mobilize its military and prepare for war with Japan.

The war with Japan lasted for four years. During that time, the United States and its allies fought a bloody and costly war against Japan. In the end, however, the United States and its allies were victorious. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945, and the war came to an end.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a tragedy that resulted in the deaths of over 2,400 Americans. It was also a turning point in World War II, and it led to the eventual defeat of Japan.

The attack on Pearl Harbor should never be forgotten. It is a reminder of the importance of being prepared for war and of the sacrifices that Americans have made to defend their country.

Today, Pearl Harbor is a national historic landmark. It is a place where visitors can learn about the events of December 7, 1941, and about the sacrifices that Americans have made to defend their country.
