Basilone set up a machine gun and began firing at the Japanese. He held off the Japanese attack for hours, saving the lives of his comrades. For his actions at Guadalcanal, Basilone was awarded the Medal of Honor.
Basilone was killed in action on Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. He was 28 years old.
Audie Murphy
Audie Murphy was born in Kingston, Texas, on June 20, 1925. He was the son of sharecroppers, and he grew up in poverty. Murphy dropped out of school in the fifth grade to help support his family.
In 1942, Murphy joined the Army. He was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division, and he fought in Europe during World War II.
Murphy's most famous action took place at the Battle of Anzio. On January 2, 1944, Murphy and his company were attacked by a German force that outnumbered them two to one. Murphy's company was pinned down, and Murphy was Free Downloaded to withdraw. But Murphy refused to leave his men behind.
