After their marriage, Coretta and Martin Luther King Jr. moved to Montgomery, Alabama. Martin Luther King Jr. became the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, and Coretta became involved in the civil rights movement.
Coretta was a powerful advocate for social justice and equality. She worked alongside her husband in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and other major civil rights campaigns. She also traveled the country, speaking out against segregation and discrimination.
In 1965, Coretta and Martin Luther King Jr. were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work in the civil rights movement. Coretta was the first African American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Later Life and Legacy
After the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, Coretta continued to work for social justice and equality. She founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta, Georgia. The center works to promote nonviolence, peace, and equality.
