Private prisons are a booming industry in the United States. There are now more than 130 private prisons in the country, housing over 120,000 people. These prisons are run by for-profit corporations, whose primary goal is to make money. As a result, private prisons are often overcrowded, understaffed, and unsanitary. Incarcerated people in private prisons are also more likely to be subjected to violence and abuse.
Shourd's book exposes the many ways in which private prisons profit from human suffering. She shows how these corporations lobby for laws that increase the number of people who are incarcerated, and how they use their political influence to ensure that they receive lucrative contracts from the government.
Shourd also tells the stories of the incarcerated people she met while working undercover. She writes about men and women who have been locked up for nonviolent crimes, and who are serving long sentences simply because they are poor or mentally ill. She also writes about the devastating impact that incarceration has on families and communities.
"Reporter Undercover Journey Into The Business Of Punishment" is a powerful and disturbing indictment of the private prison industry. Shourd's firsthand account of the horrors that incarcerated people are subjected to is a must-read for anyone concerned about the state of our criminal justice system.
