Roy was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, on October 5, 1965. He began playing hockey at a young age, and he quickly developed a reputation as a talented goaltender.
Roy played for the Granby Bisons of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) from 1981 to 1984. He was named the QMJHL's Goaltender of the Year in 1984, and he led the Bisons to the President's Cup championship.

Roy was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round (51st overall) of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Canadiens in 1985, and he quickly became one of the best goaltenders in the league.
Roy helped the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup in 1986, 1993, and 1994. He was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the most valuable player in the playoffs in 1993.
