In March 2003, the United States invaded Iraq. The war that followed was one of the bloodiest and most controversial in American history. In Highways of Death, Michael Ware, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who covered the war from the front lines, provides a groundbreaking exposé of the U.S. military's conduct in Iraq.

Ware argues that the U.S. military committed war crimes in Iraq, including the killing of innocent civilians, the use of torture, and the destruction of civilian infrastructure. He backs up his claims with extensive research, including interviews with soldiers, eyewitnesses, and Iraqi officials. Ware also provides a detailed account of the U.S. military's cover-up of its crimes.

Highways of Death is a powerful and disturbing book that sheds new light on the Iraq War. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the true cost of the war and the crimes that were committed in our name.

The Road to War

The U.S. invasion of Iraq was the culmination of a long and complex history. In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Bush administration began to argue that Iraq posed a threat to the United States. The administration claimed that Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction and that it had ties to al-Qaeda, the terrorist group responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

However, there was no evidence to support these claims. In fact, the intelligence community had concluded that Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction and that it had no ties to al-Qaeda.

Despite the lack of evidence, the Bush administration continued to push for war against Iraq. In October 2002, the administration released a National Security Strategy that declared that the United States would use preemptive military force to defend itself against threats from other countries.

In March 2003, the United States invaded Iraq without a clear provocation. The invasion was based on the false premise that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and that it had ties to al-Qaeda.

The War in Iraq

The war in Iraq was one of the bloodiest and most controversial in American history. More than 4,000 American soldiers were killed in the war, and tens of thousands more were wounded. Iraqi casualties were much higher, with estimates ranging from 100,000 to over a million dead.

The war also caused widespread destruction of Iraqi infrastructure. Hospitals, schools, and homes were bombed by U.S. forces. The war also led to the displacement of millions of Iraqis.

In 2011, the U.S. military withdrew from Iraq. However, the war continues to have a profound impact on both Iraq and the United States.

War Crimes in Iraq

Michael Ware argues that the U.S. military committed war crimes in Iraq.

A war crime is a violation of the laws of war. War crimes can include the killing of innocent civilians, the use of torture, and the destruction of civilian infrastructure.

Ware provides extensive evidence to support his claims that the U.S. military committed war crimes in Iraq.

  • In 2004, U.S. soldiers killed 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians in the town of Haditha. The soldiers claimed that they were acting in self-defense, but there was no evidence to support their claims.
  • In 2003, U.S. soldiers tortured Iraqi prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison. The soldiers used a variety of methods of torture, including beatings, sleep deprivation, and sexual abuse.
  • In 2003, U.S. forces bombed the Al Jazeera headquarters in Baghdad, killing two journalists and wounding several others.

These are just a few examples of the war crimes that were committed by the U.S. military in Iraq.

The Cover-Up

After the war, the U.S. military attempted to cover up its crimes. The military investigated itself and concluded that there was no evidence of wrongng.

However, Ware's investigation reveals that the military's investigation was flawed. The military investigators did not interview key witnesses, and they ignored evidence that contradicted their s.

The military's cover-up of its crimes in Iraq is a serious violation of the law. The military has a duty to investigate and punish war crimes, not to cover them up.

The Legacy of the Iraq War

The Iraq War has had a profound impact on both Iraq and the United States.

In Iraq, the war has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, the displacement of millions more, and the destruction of much of the country's infrastructure.

In the United States, the war has cost trillions of dollars and has led to the deaths of thousands of American soldiers. The war has also damaged the reputation of the United States and has undermined its credibility as a global leader.

The Iraq War was a tragedy. It was a war that was based on lies, and it was a war that caused great suffering to both Iraqis and Americans.

We must learn from the mistakes of the Iraq War and we must never allow such a tragedy to happen again.
