Carson's father was a farmer and her mother was a teacher. Carson's early childhood was spent on her family's farm, where she developed a love of nature and the outdoors. Carson attended Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University) and graduated in 1929 with a degree in biology. She then went on to earn a master's degree in zoology from Johns Hopkins University in 1932. After completing her graduate studies, Carson worked as a marine biologist for the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. In 1945, she published her first book, Under the Sea-Wind, which was a popular account of her experiences as a marine biologist.

Career and Activism

Carson's work as a marine biologist helped to shape her understanding of the environment. She became increasingly concerned about the impact of human activities on the natural world. In 1956, she published The Sea Around Us, which was a groundbreaking work of popular science that introduced readers to the wonders of the ocean. The book was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Carson as a leading voice in the environmental movement.

Carson's most famous work, Silent Spring, was published in 1962. The book exposed the dangers of pesticides, such as DDT, and helped to lead to the ban of DDT in the United States. Silent Spring was a controversial book when it was first published, but it has since become a classic work of environmental literature. It has been translated into more than 30 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.

Carson's activism helped to raise public awareness of the importance of protecting the environment. She testified before Congress, wrote articles for popular magazines, and gave speeches to audiences around the world. She also helped to found the environmental organization, the Sierra Club. Carson's work has inspired generations of environmentalists and activists, and her legacy continues to inspire people today.

Legacy

Rachel Carson died of breast cancer on April 14, 1964. She was 56 years old. Carson's legacy continues to inspire people around the world. She is considered one of the most important environmentalists of the 20th century, and her work helped to shape the modern environmental movement. Carson's work has been translated into more than 30 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. She has been the subject of numerous books, articles, and documentaries.
