Declan Kirby's GAA Star Away Days is an inspiring and entertaining memoir that recounts the legendary Gaelic football player's incredible journey, from his humble beginnings in rural Ireland to his unforgettable experiences on the hallowed grounds of Croke Park. With vivid prose and captivating anecdotes, Kirby paints a vivid picture of the highs and lows of a life dedicated to sport and the enduring power of the Gaelic Athletic Association.
Born in the small town of Kilmaine, County Mayo, Kirby was introduced to Gaelic football at a young age. He quickly developed a passion for the game and showed exceptional talent, leading his local team to numerous underage titles. As he progressed through the ranks, Kirby's reputation as a rising star grew, and he eventually earned a call-up to the Mayo senior team.
Kirby's time with Mayo was marked by both triumph and adversity. He was part of the team that won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1997, one of the most memorable moments in the history of the GAA. However, he also experienced the heartbreak of defeat in several other finals. Through it all, Kirby remained a dedicated and passionate member of the Mayo team, earning the respect of his teammates and opponents alike.
In addition to his exploits on the field, Kirby also became a successful manager. He led his hometown club, Kilmaine, to a county championship title in 2007, and he also had a successful stint in charge of the Mayo U-21 team. Kirby's coaching philosophy was based on the same principles that had guided him as a player: hard work, dedication, and a love of the game.
Declan Kirby GAA Star Away Days is more than just a memoir. It is a celebration of the Gaelic Athletic Association and the unique culture that surrounds it. Kirby's writing is full of warmth, humor, and nostalgia, and he captures the essence of what it means to be a true GAA fan. Whether you are a lifelong supporter of the GAA or simply curious about the sport, Declan Kirby GAA Star Away Days is a must-read.
