The book is divided into three parts. The first part, "Conversations," features interviews with Shepard conducted over the course of his career. In these interviews, Shepard discusses his work, his influences, and his personal life. The second part, "Essays," features essays by Shepard on a variety of topics, including theater, film, and writing. The third part, "Personal Reflections," features remembrances of Shepard by friends, family, and colleagues.

Throughout the book, Shepard emerges as a complex and contradictory figure. He was a brilliant writer who was also deeply troubled. He was a private person who was also a public figure. He was a man of contradictions, and yet he was also a man of great passion and integrity.
