William Henry Gates III, better known as Bill Gates, is an American entrepreneur, businessman, philanthropist, and author. He is best known as the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation, the world's largest software company, which he founded with Paul Allen in 1975. Gates led Microsoft as chairman, CEO, and chief software architect until 2000, when he stepped down as CEO but remained chairman and chief software architect. In 2014, he stepped down as chairman of Microsoft and became the founder and chairman of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to global health and development.

Early Life and Education

Bill Gates was born in Seattle, Washington, on October 28, 1955, to William H. Gates, Sr., and Mary Maxwell Gates. His father was a lawyer, and his mother was a schoolteacher. Gates has two sisters, Kristianne and Libby.

Gates attended Lakeside School, a private preparatory school in Seattle. He showed an early interest in computers and began programming at the age of 13. In 1973, he enrolled at Harvard University, but he dropped out after two years to focus on Microsoft.

Microsoft Corporation

In 1975, Gates and Allen founded Microsoft. The company initially developed and sold a BASIC interpreter for the Altair 8800 microcomputer. In 1981, Microsoft entered into a partnership with IBM to develop an operating system for IBM's new personal computer. The operating system, MS-DOS, became the standard operating system for personal computers and helped to make Microsoft a major player in the software industry.

In the 1980s, Microsoft continued to grow and develop new products, including the Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office suite of productivity software. Gates played a key role in the development of these products and helped to make Microsoft one of the most successful companies in the world.

Philanthropy

In 2000, Gates and his wife, Melinda, founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation focuses on global health and development and is one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world. The foundation has provided funding for a variety of programs, including the fight against malaria and HIV/AIDS, the improvement of education, and the promotion of financial inclusion.

Gates is a strong advocate for philanthropy and has called on other wealthy individuals to give back to society. He has also been critical of the tax policies that he believes favor the wealthy and has called for a more progressive tax system.
