An African Woman's Journey of Love, Loss, and Adventure: From Cape to Cairo is a memoir by Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi, a Nigerian writer and activist. The book tells the story of Adeleye-Fayemi's journey from her childhood in Nigeria to her work as a human rights activist in South Africa. Along the way, she encounters love, loss, and adventure, and she learns about the strength and resilience of the African woman.
Childhood in Nigeria
Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi was born in Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1963. Her father was a university professor and her mother was a nurse. Adeleye-Fayemi grew up in a comfortable home, but she was always aware of the poverty and inequality that existed in Nigeria. She was also aware of the political turmoil that plagued the country.
In 1976, Adeleye-Fayemi's father was arrested and detained by the military government. He was accused of being a member of a banned political party. Adeleye-Fayemi and her family were terrified. They did not know what had happened to her father or if they would ever see him again.
After several months, Adeleye-Fayemi's father was released from prison. He had been tortured and his health was broken. Adeleye-Fayemi was devastated by what had happened to her father. She realized that she could no longer stay silent about the injustices that were happening in Nigeria.
Exile in South Africa
In 1984, Adeleye-Fayemi went into exile in South Africa. She had been awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Cape Town. Adeleye-Fayemi was excited to be in South Africa, but she was also aware of the apartheid regime that ruled the country.
Adeleye-Fayemi quickly became involved in the anti-apartheid movement. She joined the African National Congress (ANC) and began working to end apartheid. Adeleye-Fayemi was arrested several times and spent time in prison. She was also threatened with deportation.
Despite the risks, Adeleye-Fayemi continued to work for a free and democratic South Africa. She was inspired by the resilience and determination of the South African people. She also learned about the importance of international solidarity in the fight against apartheid.
Return to Nigeria
In 1994, apartheid was finally abolished in South Africa. Adeleye-Fayemi returned to Nigeria and continued her work as a human rights activist. She has worked to promote democracy, human rights, and gender equality. She has also worked to support victims of violence and conflict.
An African Woman's Journey of Love, Loss, and Adventure: From Cape to Cairo is a powerful and inspiring memoir. It is a story of resilience, determination, and hope. Adeleye-Fayemi's journey is a testament to the strength and courage of the African woman.
